This New Horror Film Has Debuted on Streaming, and It Might Make or Break Your Partnership.

Consider this a dare for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy the horror genre: Get comfortable with your significant other and view Together. This independent film success of 2025 recently had its launch on a streaming platform via Hulu. At first glance, it could look like conventional physical horror, but within Together lies a profound contemplation about the ways we decide to love one another.

An Introductory Film Delving into Partnership Complexities

Together marks the first full-length movie for director Michael Shanks. It showcases Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, partners that have been together for ten years. Having wed in actuality in 2017, Franco and Brie contribute a unique chemistry to their portrayals, masterfully depicting both the good and bad of a long-term relationship.

The narrative starts when Tim and Millie move from the metropolis to the country for her career. A commonly used story element, of course, but that’s largely where the tropes end. Together evolves into as much a examination of mental states of the couple's dynamic as it is a body horror flick.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While hiking near their rural residence, a tempest descends, and the protagonists discover an hole in the earth. After spending the night there and eventually escaping, a mysterious influence takes hold of the duo. This force creates a supernatural closeness between them that goes exceeding typical partnership.

The complete narrative is a methodically building of scares, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, unsettling (but not excessively graphic) body horror, and surprisingly comedic exchanges (sometimes during something disturbing). Michael Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and presents them in a consistently growing atmosphere of fear.

Layered Performances

A significant portion of Together is only Brie and Franco, and they deftly portray numerous complexities to the characters’ relationship. Millie’s confidence and feeling of intimacy is waning due to a lack of intimacy. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his reluctance to focus on anything other than his struggling artistic pursuits slowly bubbles to the surface.

Conversely, Tim senses confinement and cut off by Millie, who’s the reason they’ve relocated rural and removed from his network of friends. He is terrified of the notion of completely losing his individual identity in his partner. This fear is intensified by the circumstance he can’t drive and relies on Millie for transportation.

The director's cleverest decision in this movie never makes Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

Both characters grapple with the type of challenges that are inherent in any relationship after ten years. Fundamentally, they have affection for each other. They still laugh together, offer support, and are vulnerable at times. But beneath it all, there’s an persistent current of uncertainty about their bond.

Symbolism and Metaphor

While the supernatural forces in Together symbolize these concerns of codependency and totally devoting oneself to a partner, the allegory does not come across as clumsy or pretentious. Instead, these more disturbing, unsettling scenes present a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights enhance each other in a mutually beneficial way.

A Debated Finale

Together’s ending, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the movie's final takeaway about enmeshed dynamics. It has been said that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for staying single. Meanwhile, a few pairs experiencing tension found that the film actually helped them make up.

Regardless of your relationship status, your own interpretation could function as a telling indicator of how you think about commitment. Will the conclusion inspire a sense of discomfort and fear, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you see yourself in either protagonist and feel frustration, or simply look at your partner and say, “I’d do that for you”?

No matter your reaction, Together is an test you can embark on at this very moment.

Together is currently playing on the streaming service Hulu now.
