Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, police confirm police.
Cars, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they reported in a release.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday, when a man discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued substance.
The fluid had been applied in the shape of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Officers then discovered many other smeared cars and house walls in the surrounding area.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under legislation outlawing the public exhibition of symbols from the Nazi era.
Officials report preliminary tests indicate the liquid was likely human bodily fluid.
"Currently there is no indication as to its origin; investigators are currently not aware of any injuries in association with the incident," they added.
Municipal representatives announced they were trying "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the community for tips.
An important political figure commented the incident made him stunned and had to be resolved rapidly.
"This incident hits the core of Hanau and reopens the pain of the right-wing terrorist attack half a decade ago," he posted on social media, mentioning the killing of nine people by a assailant aiming at individuals of immigrant origin in February 2020.
